FAQ

SMSF questions, answered

How much does it cost to set up an SMSF?

Establishment typically involves the trust deed, trustee structure (we generally recommend a corporate trustee, which adds an ASIC company setup), ATO registrations and rollover paperwork. We quote a fixed fee up front once we know your structure, and we will tell you honestly whether an SMSF makes sense for your balance and goals before anything is established.

Is an SMSF worth it for me?

It depends on your balance, your appetite for involvement and what you want the fund to do — control and direct property investment are the usual reasons people switch. Whether it suits you is a personal advice question, and unlike most accounting firms we have licensed financial planners in the same office (our advisers are authorised representatives of ASVW Financial Services, AFSL 446176), so the strategy conversation and the setup happen under one roof.

What does annual SMSF compliance involve?

Every SMSF must prepare annual financial statements and a tax return, and be audited each year by an independent approved auditor. We handle the accounting, arrange the independent audit and lodge the return, and keep you ahead of contribution caps and pension minimums along the way.

Can my SMSF buy property?

SMSFs can hold property, and commercial property used in your own business is a well-worn strategy. The rules are strict — arm’s-length terms, sole purpose test, and specific limits on borrowing arrangements. We do the accounting and compliance side and work with your adviser on whether the strategy fits.

Can you take over an existing SMSF from another accountant?

Yes. We collect the fund’s records with your authority, bring the accounts current, and take over the annual cycle — statements, audit and lodgement. Funds that are behind on lodgements are a specialty; catching up quickly matters because the ATO can make a late fund non-complying.
